What's the Status of the Job Market January

Today’s job market is a mixture of highs and lows mixed with confusion and chaos. That stated, some industries continue to grow and have seen little to no effect stemming from the current Covid19 pandemic. It is important not to become discouraged, but to seek alternative ways to redefine your career.

Below is just a glimpse of what the job market is reflecting for the month of January 2021. Unemployment has remained steady for the past two months.

Industries With Job Losses

  • Leisure and Hospitality
  • Private Education
  • Government

There should be no surprise that losses in the Leisure and Hospitality industry continue to decline. Covid19, and the lack of federal help continue to stifle the growth for restaurants, bars, hotels, and other businesses in this sector.

Industries With Job Gains

  • Professional and Business Services
  • Retail Trade
  • Construction
  • Transportation and Warehousing
  • Health Care (see below)

Professional and Business Services, including temporary agencies, increased by more than 160,000 new or filled jobs in the month of December 2020.

In addition, the Health Care industry added close to 40,000 jobs in hospitals and ambulatory services. Nursing care facilities, however, suffered a loss of 6,000 jobs due to Covid19.

Jamilah’s Tip of the Month

Job Market

Networking is by far one of the biggest components when it comes to changing careers. Due to the changes in hiring, many companies are simply not advertising open positions like they’ve done in the past. It really comes down to word-of-mouth and who you know to get the jump on which businesses are hiring, especially for top-level positions.

Make it a daily goal to reach out to both industry and non-industry contacts, and be sure to follow-up. For a few tips on networking click here.
